SHARE YOUR WORK!
Though our editors invite submissions, ASCENDING also seeks to be a global representation that reaches far beyond the social and professional circle of our editors. As such, we invite all emerging artists to submit their work through one of our Open Calls below for review and possible inclusion in future issues. Simply click on the icon on the left to access the corresponding Google Form. If you have any questions or are unable to access the Google Form, please use the form on the "Contact" tab and a member of our team will be in touch to help!
ARTIST
We invite emerging theatre artists (in the widest terms) to share their work with us. This includes traditional performance designers, as well as design-driven performance artists, makers, and practitioners. These submissions will be used to both curate featured designer content on the platform and as a global database of artists that our editors can reach out to for valuable perspective.
PERSPECTIVE PIECES
The experience of the emerging designer is ever evolving and differs greatly from region to region. The editorial group is now accepting 100-300 word abstracts for perspective pieces exploring individual designers experiences in the industry. While being on any topic felt relevant by the author, the final article would be between 1000 – 3000 words and be submitted along with no fewer than 3 images that can accompany the piece. While offering an individual and personal perspective, the editors are looking for pieces that also have a strong foundation in experience and facts to support the writer’s position.
ASCENDING recognizes the valuable role that research plays in the development of modern theatre making and therefor wishes to give voice to the next generation of theatre theorists– whether practice or more traditionally research based. We are currently accepting 2 types of submissions and are please that beginning with Folio I. Act 2 in October 2020 all research work will be peer reviewed.
RESEARCH : FINISHED PAPERS
Ranging in length from 1000 – 5000 words, these are finished papers that have not been previously published but were possibly written as part of a course assignment or are an excerpt of a larger body of research. When possible, the article should be submitted in the native language of the author and in English. Each submission should also be accompanied by 3-10 images that the author has permission to publish in accompaniment to the article, as well as 50 word biography and links to any online presence of the author.
RESEARCH : ABSTRACTS
The editorial group is also interested in receiving 200-500 word abstracts of papers in development for consideration for future publishing. These maybe submitted in any language.
In effort to allow a number of artists to share their voice around a specific topic, we also have a selection of "Quick Takes" accepting short (approximately 100 words or less) statements.
COMMUNITY DRIVEN WORK
Many artists find rich joy in making work with community-driven companies, engaging with local people to make extraordinary work that touches at the very heart of theatre making. Whether in traditional theatres, on seasides, in disused warehouses or ancient temple halls, these endeavours seek to enrich communities by connecting on a deeper level. We invite emerging performance designers, scenographers, and visual dramaturges to share their experiences of creating community driven projects in short statements of approximately 100 words for our April 2023 edition, with the form available until 20 March 2023.
NON-THEATRE DESIGN
Theatre designers utilise a wide range of skills that they often choose to employ in design and art mediums outside of the theatre. Some run Etsy shops making textile products. Some create custom Cosplay looks for clients. While others pursue adjacent careers in floral design, fine art, or custom window displays. No matter how designers choose to employ their skills outside the theatre, they are exciting contributions to the creative sector. We invite emerging performance designers, scenographers, and visual dramaturges to share their experiences of creating community driven projects in short statements of approximately 100 words for our April 2023 edition, with the form available until 20 March 2023.
